Propose Refinements to Optopics and Review Design Considerations

Propose refinements to Optopics 1.1

Format for Topic Suggestion

  • Currently there is no format for topic suggestions in discord, which makes it difficult to post suggested topics on snapshot since there is a 32 character limit on snapshot poll options
Create requirement that Topic Suggestions must be prefixed with the words ‘Topic Suggestion”
  • This will make it more clear what is a topic suggestion and what is not a topic suggestion
  • This will also make it easier for people to post in the town hall channel without feeling like they might accidentally create a topic proposal
Create requirement that the topic proposal title must be less than 32 characters in order to be added as an option in the poll for Optopics
  • The discord post can include much more details and links if desired, but it must be prefixed with “Topic Suggestion” then include a <32 character title.

Date and Time of Topic

  • We may want to change the day/time when topics can be submitted on Discord so that we have more time to prepare the thumbnail and promotional messages
    • I didn’t realize it previously but Optopics does introduce some unpredictability in the topics that are discussed that can make it more difficult for the Optimystics team to promote the event in advance
      • With the original Cagendas game mode, we know which topic that we’ll discuss in advance with a high degree of certainty by Monday at 17 UTC. This helps us make compelling promotions and set clear expectations about what will be discussed at the town hall
      • With Optopics, we don’t know if a topic will be ranked at the top of the list until it’s discussed during the event. We’ll have a good idea about what topic will be discussed first if people vote early in the week, but many people will probably wait until later in the week to vote and people can always change their votes.
        • Furthermore, topics may only be discussed for a couple minutes and we might discuss many topics and where not sure how many topics will be discussed. This can all make it more difficult to promote in advance
    • Additionally, this reduced predictability can also make it more difficult for the host or topic presenters like me to prepare presentations for topics because you are less certain about which topic(s) will be discussed.
    • There are also other ways to provide more predictability into Optopics, such as increasing the threshold for moving to the next topic or removing the ability for 51% of well-respected community members to create a new topic
    • In any case there is always a trade-off between predictability and flexibility. It’s good to have both the original cagendas game mode and optopics because they each offer a valuable set of tradeoffs that can help in various situations
Consider- i think that one way to provide more predictability to Optopics and make the game design more elegant is to simply keep a running Optopics game or database going in the discord chat where people can always propose topic suggestions in the discord chat, then the topics will be added the next time that an Optopics game is approved via Cagendas.
  • This way, people can suggest topics in the Optimism Town Hall chat at any time throughout the week and they don’t need to make it between Monday and Wednesday or some small window after Optopics is approved via Cagendas.
    • This makes it MUCH simpler and easier for people to suggest or propose a topic at any time. It removes a large educational barrier that’s needed to understand how the Cagendas and Optopics game rules work.
    • We should explain the topic system This way and we could set the time for adding options to polls to be.

Review Design Considerations for Future Iterations of Optopics

Review Feedback Session 1

add summary of potential improvements from Use AI to summarize the conversation with Rosmari about Optopics
  • The part about being welcoming for newcomers and having some flexibility from the rules

Countdown Timer

  • We may want to reduce the countdown timer to 30 seconds to make a more fast paced game environment

Notion Design Ideas for Optopics

  • Include topics as projects with new button in projects database to upvote Optopics week 1?
    • Using the projects database instead of the topics database might simplify streamline our workflow
    • We can create a new property for each week of Optopics
    • I think this might work well after we do Review Methods for Voting with Respect in Notion and Snapshot via the Notion API, but it’s better to just use snapshot for now so we can vote with Respect

Older Design Considerations that have already been Resolved

Thread Creation vs Server Channel

I’ll create a thread in optimism fractal discord at approximately 17 utc on Sunday/Monday

  • is a thread needed? maybe just add it directly to the discord and then we can start doing a thread if needed in the future. Yes that’s better for now to generate discussions in the general chat without hiding it too much in the thread. Anyone can write topics they’d like to discuss in the thread
  • Actually i just decided to create a channel instead- this is more versatile and interesting and can be used for other kinds of town hall proposals and games in the future as well
    • it can also be renamed or moved in the future if we want too
    • this is good because it keeps the general chat more sacred and lightweight too so the great thoughftul posts don’t get overwhelming

Ranked Choice vs Quadratic Algorithm

test this to see if snapshot allows people can rank order just a few options even if there are many more options on the list
  • it does not allow this and the quadratic voting algorithm is better for this reason

idk what snapshot uses as the ranked choice algorithm. it would be good to find this out at some point, though not a high priority. ideally using fibonacci to weight each rank 60% higher and distributing/allocating respect according to this might be a good strategy in the future, though for now we can just use whatever formula they use by default

ie quadratic. more about this in Review Methods for Voting with Respect in Notion and Snapshot via the Notion API

ranked choice is simple and best for now if it works, but quadratic works better since you don’t need to vote on all options, but other methods and voting strategies can also be explored in the future if desired
