Reimagining Community Coordination
Before we get into the technical details of our onchain accounts, let’s first consider why it’s important to have community accounts on Ethereum.
The traditional models of organizational governance face inherent limitations - they either sacrifice democratic principles as they scale or become too unwieldy to function effectively. Through the implementation of fractal democracy with our innovative onchain infrastructure, we're demonstrating how communities can maintain genuine democratic participation while scaling to encompass thousands of participants.
What is a Community Account?
At the heart of this revolution are Web3 accounts - specialized Ethereum accounts that enable onchain transactions and decentralized community coordination. Unlike traditional organizational structures where power typically concentrates in the hands of a few, these accounts enable communities to collectively manage resources and execute decisions through sophisticated democratic processes on the blockchain.
This transformation opens unprecedented possibilities for community coordination:
- True decentralization of decision-making power
- Merit-based influence through verifiable contributions
- Democratic delegation of community resources
- Transparent and accountable governance
- Scalable coordination frameworks that maintain human connection
Optimism Fractal's Innovative Account Structure
Our community currently operates through two complementary accounts on the OP Mainnet, each representing different stages in the evolution of decentralized coordination. You can learn more about the unique upgrade path that we use in this document and learn more about the roles of the Parent and Child Respect in the demo video for the ORDAO Fractal App.
Parent Respect Account (Seasons 1-4)
The foundation of our decentralized governance was established through our original community account using the first generation of Optimism Fractal Software, active from October 2023 through September 2024. This pioneering implementation demonstrated the viability of community-driven coordination at scale.
Over 65 community members participated in democratic decision-making processes, generating thousands of on-chain attestations that created an immutable record of contribution evaluation. The account distributed Respect through a hybrid token system combining ERC20 and ERC721 standards, laying the groundwork for more sophisticated governance mechanisms.
Currently, this account maintains a crucial role as the owner of the Optimism Fractal ORDAO contract, bridging our early experiments with our current implementation.
Child Respect ORDAO Account (Season 5-Present)
Our active community account represents the next generation of decentralized coordination infrastructure. Every week, participants gather to play the Respect Game and submit consensus through this account, creating a living laboratory for democratic governance. The system distributes Respect as ERC1155 tokens, each featuring beautiful commemorative artwork that captures the spirit of community contribution.
This implementation enables sophisticated onchain governance through ORDAO integration, allowing for truly decentralized community decision-making with the Optimistic Respect-based Executive Contract (OREC). You can learn about this powerful onchain governance protocol, explore the code repositories, and watch videos to see it in action in the articles linked above.

How We Use Our Community Account
Our operational infrastructure rests on a variety of interconnected consensus processes that enable democratic coordination at any scale. This implementation of fractal democracy creates natural feedback loops that strengthen community bonds while maintaining decentralization. Each of these consensus processes interacts with our onchain accounts in different ways.
Our onchain community accounts serve two main functions:
- They provide a platform for reputation consensus by enabling participants to post their Respect Game results.
- They record and store Respect Tokens earned by participants, which are used across various contexts including governance processes, our organizational structure with Hats Protocol, and many other applications.
Each Respect Token is distributed as a non-transferrable ERC-1155 NFT on the OP Mainnet. Learn more about Respect Tokens and how our community uses onchain accounts in this introductory guide.
Governing the Community Account
Our onchain governance infrastructure in built upon three pillars of onchain consensus. Explore the governance research document for more details or see below for an overview of some of our key governance processes that use our onchain community accounts.
1. The Respect Game: Foundation for Democratic Evaluation
The Respect Game transforms abstract governance principles into tangible weekly practice. Community members gather to share their contributions to Optimism and collaboratively evaluate each other's impact. This peer-review process creates a meritocratic foundation for influence, where reputation is earned through verified contributions rather than financial stake.
Through careful game design and technological implementation, we've created a system that is:
- Fair: Everyone has equal opportunity to participate and earn influence
- Fast: Decisions can be made efficiently while maintaining democratic principles
- Fun: Engagement is enhanced through gamification and social interaction

2. Optimism Fractal Council: Democratic Leadership
Building on the reputation established through the Respect Game, our council system demonstrates how communities can implement representative governance while maintaining democratic principles. Each week, top contributors are eligible to guide community development through structured proposal and voting mechanisms.
This creates a dynamic leadership structure that:
- Rewards consistent valuable contribution
- Maintains accountability through regular rotation
- Enables efficient decision-making while preserving democratic oversight
- Creates clear pathways for growing community influence

3. ORDAO: Next-Generation Governance Infrastructure
The Optimistic Respect-based DAO (ORDAO) represents a quantum leap in decentralized governance capability. Powered by the Optimistic Respect-based Executive Contract (OREC), this system enables communities to propose and execute on-chain actions through sophisticated consensus mechanisms.
This infrastructure demonstrates how DAOs can evolve beyond simple token voting to implement truly democratic coordination:
- Optimistic governance mechanisms reduce coordination overhead
- Respect-based voting ensures decisions reflect genuine contribution
- Multiple consensus layers prevent capture while maintaining efficiency
- Open-source implementation enables adoption by any community
How Our Accounts Work Together: Creating Democratic Synergy
The true power of our coordination infrastructure emerges through the seamless interaction between consensus layers. During each weekly event, we witness the transformation of individual contributions into collective action through a sophisticated yet elegant process:
First, community members share their work and engage in democratic evaluation through the Respect Game. These peer assessments are then recorded on-chain, creating permanent attestations of contribution and impact. The distribution of Respect tokens follows, not just as rewards, but as building blocks for deeper governance participation.
This creates a natural flywheel effect where active participation builds authentic reputation through peer recognition. This earned reputation then enables meaningful influence in governance decisions. These collective decisions guide community development, which in turn creates more opportunities for valuable contribution. The cycle continues, strengthening both individual engagement and community cohesion.
