About this project

This document outlines a project to formalize and request leads in Optimism Fractal, a system for breakout rooms. The goal is to have knowledgeable leads who can administer Fractalgram, facilitate discussions, and provide a fun experience for participants. The project includes responsibilities, requirements, and benefits of being a lead.

Let us know if you are interested in learning Fractalgram and we can do a session after an upcoming Optimism Fractal event to talk more about this. This page is an early draft of a plan to build a system for Leads to lead breakout rooms. Over time we’ll refine it.

Formalize and Request Leads in Optimism Fractal

Due to expected growth of optimism fractal, we’d like to show community members to operate fractalgram. Share the tutorial and video and ask to stay around a bit after an upcoming respect game so we’re prepared for more than three breakout groups . Make sure we’re a few steps ahead of the growth so we can provide great experiences to all participant

Leads play an important role in Optimism Fractal. Every breakout room should have at least one participant who is knowledgable about how to play the Respect Game, can admin Fractalgram, and can help lead the discussions to provide an fun experience for all participants

In the coming months we may roll out a system where anyone can apply to be a lead (and earn a lead hat), but for now we can start small and take it one step at a time

Responsibilities of Lead

It’s important for leads to fulfill a few key responsibilities to help the community succeed

  • Admin Fractalgram
  • Help move along conversation.
    • Aim to reach consensus by 17:45 to ensure that we’ll have time
      • If it goes past 17:45 that’s ok and we have until 18:00 to make a decision, but it’s best to aim for 17:45 because the group won’t earn respect if they don’t reach consensus by 18 UTC
  • Help with telegram and optimism addresses

Recommended

  • Set timer for 4 minutes for each participant
  • remind participants that they can share their screen if they want to give a visual overview of their contributions
  • Help make the room more fun, welcoming, and enjoyable
    • For example, if there’s a gap in the conversation after someone presents, it can be a good idea to thank them and then ask if they want to pick someone to go next
      • It’s often good to thank people and share a sentence or two
    • If any new participants don’t take the four minutes, it can be helpful to remind or encourage them that they can share more if they’d like before passing it on
      • if new participants are shy and stop speaking well before 4 minutes, then offer that they can speak more before passing it on if they want
    • Ask if anyone has questions or comments related to reaching consensus before reaching consensus
    • If there’s some time at the end before the players return to the community room, consider asking a question about someone’s work, sharing a joke, or making an interesting comment. It can be helpful to make a quick note when someone says something especially interesting in their presentation that you can ask them about afterwards to help educate the group
  • Record video
  • It can be helpful to announce the game as it’s in progress so everyone (including viewers or new participants) have a better understanding of what’s happening
    • Remind participants and viewers of the objective- ie for level 6 - who do you think did the most to help optimism this week?
  • Communicate with meeting host in discord in needed for issues
  • Try to make the most of our time together. It can be nice to have some space and silence occasionally, but it’s also good to be outgoing and spark up interesting discussions that everyone enjoys
  • The lead could prepare a presentation and anything else in advance so they can be fully focused on the room
