Thank you for the feedback
Hahaha I hadn’t actually thought of OPTOPUS but that’s good! So far I’ve been calling him Opie, or Opie the Optimistic Octopus. I’m glad you love and are laughing about the octopus, I’d love to further develop his character and have some exciting plans to do so in the future…
For example, he’s coordinating many optimistic topics with Respect and his many tentacles…
Yes I’m trying to figure out the best way to communicate it while also working within the technical limitations and the desire to achieve multiple goals, including the ability to schedule topics in advance and the flexibility to change topics in real-time.
It gets improved each week with feedback and I think that this new explanation of the Optimism Town Hall snapshot space for scheduling in advance and the OPTOPICS snapshot space for prioritizing non-scheduled topics is the best explanation so far, though I just thought of it last week and it will need some testing to determine if it’s sufficient or should be changed.
Glad you like the idea for topic transitions. It’s kind of inspired by OREC :D
Yeah we’ve done a topic transition a few times so far and it worked pretty well, but we haven’t used it much yet. I think it could be a great innovation as it gets more used and developed, especially when there are more people
What do you mean by ‘maybe Town Hall proposals should be considered a day or few earlier so that people are clear how and where to make a proposal for their topic…?’
Ok cool, I appreciate the clarification and am looking forward to hearing more details
Nice, do you want to propose a topic about it on the OPTOPICS snapshot space or do you want me to do it? I’d be happy to propose and/or vote for this topic and discuss it then if you’d like
Thanks. Yeah I mistakenly linked to the Optimism Fractal snapshot space, I just fixed the link and changed it to https://snapshot.org/#/optimismtownhall.eth.
Yes Snapshot does offer sub-spaces and I tried to set Optimism Town Hall as a sub-space for Optimism Fractal a couple times, but I haven't been able to get it to work properly yet. I've been meaning to try it again or ask their support but haven't gotten around to it yet. You're an admin in both spaces, so you can also try configuring it if you'd like (it's the advanced settings tab).
Here is how I see it:
- We use the Optimism Town Hall snapshot space for scheduling specific topics in advance for each event. If a topic is selected via the rules of Cagendas in the Optimism Town Hall Snapshot Space (ie it has the most votes on Monday at 17 UTC), then it is scheduled as the main/first topic for the upcoming town hall event. This is useful when someone wants to schedule a topic in advance for a particular event, give people a few days to prepare for the topic, and have time to organize promotions around it.
- We use the OPTOPICS snapshot space for organizing an ongoing list of topics that we can discuss at any event. This is useful when there’s a topic that someone wants to discuss but it’s not very time sensitive, could be discussed at other events in the future, or is proposed within a few days of the event. It provides more flexibility, allowing the community to choose the topic(s) at any point after Monday at 17 UTC while still having a well-organized and democratic process for choosing the agenda.
If there are no topic proposals for a week specifically in the town hall space, then I think that we should discuss the top voted topic on the optopics snapshot space. Over the past few weeks nobody else has been proposing topics and there hasn’t been anything in particular that i’ve felt the need to schedule in advance, so I’ve been proposing optopics each week prior to 17 UTC on Monday to provide a clear process for choosing topics and ensure that we don’t have a situation where there are no topic proposals in the town hall space each week.
At some point in the future, it would probably be helpful to modify the rules of Cagendas to add that if no topics are proposed that week then we’ll play OPTOPICS instead. This could also help in situations where an approved topic for that week is deemed to be sufficiently discussed at the event (ie if an approved topic is finished after 15 minutes). I’ve thought about making a proposal to the Optimism Fractal council about this and we could do it at any time really. I think it would be a good change that would simplify and clarify the rules, but I’m not sure if it would use the same rules of OPTOPICS for topic transitions. So it would take a bit of thinking to design well and it doesn’t seem like a very big priority at the moment.
Does this answer your questions and clarify how proposals from optopics and town hall spaces relate to each other? Do you think this sounds good or are there any other changes that you’d suggest?
Yes I would love for Snapshot to enable where you can spread your votes across proposals instead of having 100% of voting power in all proposals. This is what I’ve wanted for Optimism Town Hall since it started and it would make the Cagendas games much better. That’s how @john-travolta built Consortium and I much prefer it, but this feature isn’t available by default on Snapshot and I’m not sure if it could be easily added.
The ‘abstain’ option is a temporary solution to enable this functionality of voting with only a portion of Respect and it works well enough for now, but it’s rather clunky and not very intuitive.
I drafted two questions about this to ask in the Snapshot Discord a couple months ago, but got really busy around that time and haven’t sent them yet. I’d like to send the messages as soon as possible, though I have a long backlog of tasks and am hesitant to send a message that might require more follow-up tasks when the system works well enough for now with the abstain option.
It would be much appreciated if anyone else wants to ask Snapshot about this and figure out how to make it work. Otherwise I’ll send the messages and try to add this functionality to the OPTOPICS Snapshot Spaces as soon as possible.
